Search “numerology” and you'll find two traditions sharing one name — and slightly different maths. Most apps and quizzes use the Western, Pythagorean system. Ninefold uses the Vedic system. Here's the difference, plainly, and why it's worth knowing which one your reading came from.
Pythagorean numerology (sometimes called Western or Chaldean-adjacent) grew out of the Greek school of Pythagoras and was popularised into the self-help and dating-app remake we all recognise — the quick “what's your number?” quiz. Its letter-to-number mapping is simple and alphabetical (A=1, B=2 … I=9, J=1…).
Vedic numerology comes out of Indian tradition and is woven much more tightly into the wider practice of Vedic astrology. It leans on its own alphabetical mapping, works with birth-time precision in ways Pythagoras didn't, and — crucially for our purposes — is not just a personality label. In Vedic practice, numbers are read alongside planetary periods, which is where the timing part of a reading comes from.

The most practical difference for you as a reader: a Vedic reading includes timing. It doesn't just tell you what a person is like — it describes which periods of life favour which kinds of effort, which is exactly the “when” people most often want answered.

Neither is “more correct” — they're different lenses, like two dialects of the same language. But they are not interchangeable, and here's the practical point: define the game before you let anyone deal the cards. If you've read a bunch of “your number” content, it was almost certainly Pythagorean. That's fine. But when it comes to a reading you're paying for, knowing which system produced it matters — because the Life Path number on a Pythagorean site may not be the same number a Vedic reader draws from your chart, and the timing a Vedic reading offers isn't in a Pythagorean quiz at all.
